Supply chain data and component orders analyzed by three independent research firms point to Apple preparing a second-generation mixed reality device that would address the most significant criticisms of the original Vision Pro: its weight, its price, and its limited battery life. The new device, reportedly codenamed "N109" internally, is targeting a launch in the fourth quarter of 2026 at a price point between $1,500 and $1,800 — less than half the original Vision Pro's $3,499 starting price.
The weight reduction is the most notable engineering achievement. The original Vision Pro weighs 600 grams, which caused neck strain during extended use and was frequently cited as the device's primary physical limitation. The new design, according to component orders placed with Apple's manufacturing partners, uses a magnesium-aluminum alloy frame and a redesigned optical system that reduces total weight to approximately 350 grams — a 42% reduction that brings it closer to the comfort threshold for all-day wear.
The price reduction comes from a combination of component simplification and manufacturing scale. The original Vision Pro's dual micro-OLED displays — custom-ordered from Sony at a reported cost of $450 per pair — are being replaced with a single-display-per-eye design sourced from LG Display at an estimated $180 per pair. The M2 and R1 dual-chip architecture is being consolidated into a single A19-based processor that handles both application processing and real-time sensor fusion, reducing chip costs by approximately 40%.
"The original Vision Pro was a developer kit disguised as a consumer product," said Ming-Chi Kuo, the supply chain analyst whose forecasts have proven reliably accurate for Apple product launches. "Apple needed to ship something to establish the platform and get developers building. The N109 is the product they wanted to ship all along — one that normal people might actually buy."
Battery life improvements come from the more efficient processor and a redesigned external battery pack that uses higher-density cells. The original Vision Pro's two-hour battery life was a persistent criticism, particularly for media consumption use cases. The new design reportedly achieves four hours of continuous use, with a swappable battery system that allows hot-swapping for extended sessions.
The software ecosystem is also maturing. Apple revealed at WWDC 2026 that over 5,000 visionOS applications are now available, including productivity tools from Microsoft and Google, immersive media experiences from Disney and Netflix, and a growing catalog of spatial games. A new "Shared Spaces" feature allows multiple Vision Pro users in the same physical location to see shared virtual objects — a capability that early enterprise adopters have requested for collaborative design and engineering work.
Market reception to the leaks has been mixed. While the price and weight improvements are widely welcomed, some observers question whether $1,500 is still too expensive for a device whose killer use case remains unclear. The original Vision Pro sold approximately 500,000 units in its first year — respectable for a first-generation product but far below the multi-million-unit volumes that define mainstream consumer electronics categories.
"The fundamental challenge for spatial computing is not the hardware. It is the software," said Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies. "What is the thing you cannot do without this device? Apple has not yet answered that question convincingly. A cheaper, lighter device helps, but it does not resolve the value proposition gap."
Enterprise adoption may provide the bridge. Companies including Walmart, Lowe's, and Porsche have deployed Vision Pro for employee training, design review, and field service support. These use cases justify the cost through productivity gains and could establish the platform's utility while consumer applications mature.
The competitive landscape has also evolved. Meta's Quest 3, priced at $499, has sold 12 million units and dominates the consumer VR market. A rumored Meta AR glasses project, targeting a 2027 launch at $799, could undercut Apple on price while offering similar functionality. But Apple's integration of hardware, software, and services — and its brand positioning — give it advantages that pure hardware competitors lack.
For now, the leaks suggest Apple is learning from the Vision Pro's mixed reception. Whether those lessons translate into mainstream adoption will depend on whether the company can articulate a compelling reason to wear a computer on your face.
